Building-integrated PV-Systems

Evalon Solar a high performance, single-ply roofing membrane integrated with flexible and lightweight photovoltaic (PV) modules. The system is produced by alwitra Flachdachdachsysteme GmbH, Trier. An example of installation on a flat roof on a factory unit in Triptis Germany, has proven the system generated 13.2MWhr per year from 370 sq m.

PV roof tiles, facing south tilted at an angle of 30 degrees, with a typical installation 2kWp domestic system in the UK will generate 1.5MWh per year. A typical cost for a domestic house 2kWp system is approx £12,000 to £14,000, it may be possible to claim 50% back through grants.

Solar Water Heaters - the average home uses approx. 2,500kWh per year for hot water, the use of solar water heaters can reduce this by 60% to 70%. There are two types of systems, flat plate and evacuated tube collectors. The flat plate is more commonly used and would require approx. 3-4m sq for a typical domestic installation. The evacuated tube collectors are more efficient, produce higher temperatures and would require less area, 2m sq will cover a typical domestic installation but the system is more expensive. Typical costs vary between the two systems a flat plate inc. installation would cost between £2000 to £4000 and the evacuated tube system inc. installation would cost between £3500 to £5500.
